Assessment of Seasonal Variations in Groundwater Quality: The City of Belmopan
Published at : November 06, 2021
Synopsis: Seasonal investigation of groundwater quality was carried out in the City of Belmopan in the years 2019 and 2020 covering two seasons, dry and wet. Groundwater samples were collected from various locations in the city namely, Las Flores, San Martin, Salvapan, and Maya Mopan. Samples were analyzed for their physio-chemical parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), depth, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, nitrates, phosphates, iron, and chlorine, as well as microbial parameters such as E. coli and Fecal coliforms. Results indicated that there are significant seasonal variations in water quality parameters. Also, the majority of groundwater samples‟ physio-chemical parameters were within their acceptable limits except for Iron, Nitrates, phosphates, TDS, Conductivity, and Turbidity. Microbial results indicated that all sites showed high concentration in colonies of E. coli, Fecal coliforms and Total Coliforms at the time of sampling, therefore the groundwater in the City of Belmopan can be used for domestic use only after pre-treatment. Further studies are advised to monitor the state of groundwater to prevent further contaminations from occurring.
About the presenters: Nathaniel was born and raised in Belize. He is passionate about conservation and water quality. He completed his Bachelors Degree at the University of Belize where he was pursuing a degree in Natural Recourse Management. Furthermore, during his time at the University of Belize, Nathaniel saw the effects that humans had on the water supply and through his Bachelors research, he inventoried and assessed the water quality of ground water within the City of Belmopan. He has also participated in regional and national seminars in water resource management where he represented the University of Belize.
Josué Aké is a lecturer at the University of Belize, in the Natural Resource Management, Marine Biology and Biology programs. He researches in water resource management and environmental assessment, focusing in water quality within watersheds using environmental conceptual frameworks and environmental assessment tools within the realm of Water Quality Management (Technical, Institutional, Legislation and Financial). He is a local Expert/Investigator in Water Quality Management, Watershed Management, Integrated Water Resource Management and Water Conservation Education.
