Example of what to do when the leash gets tight.

Demonstration of Turid Rugaas’s method for teaching loose leash walking.
1. When the leash gets tight, STOP walking. Do not say anything. Just stop.
2. Make a sound that you have decided will mean "follow me and get a snack". For example: click your tongue, pat your leg, or say "yes".
3. Turn and take a few steps in the opposite direction.
4. When your dog catches up to you give them a snack!
For best results:
1. Teach your dog the sound at home by making the sound (saying the word) and giving them a treat.
2. Try this out in a pretty boring area like maybe inside the house or your yard. Let's make it easy for the dog to succeed.
